When most people think of Plastic Surgery, the first thing they think about is Aesthetic or Cosmetic Surgery. Aesthetic Surgery is that component of Plastic Surgery that involves enhancing or modifying normal anatomic in order to improve their appearance. Some procedures, such as breast augmentation, rhinoplasty (nasal surgery) or liposuction, are done to modify anatomic characteristics that were never felt to be attractive. Other aesthetic procedures are done to rejuvenate features that were previously felt to be attractive, but which have become less so due to the effects of weight change, pregnancy and/or aging. Rhytidectomy (facelift), abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), brachioplasty (arm reduction), thigh lifts and mastopexy (breast lift) fall into this category. Though many problems require surgery to correct them, some problems can currently be managed nonsurgically with skin care and injectable agents.
